Rerating gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR)

May 4, 2018
NTEA receives questions on re-rating truck GVWR, especially from upfitters asked to lower it on a used (already titled) vehicle. Most of these requests come from customers who buy a truck with a GVWR greater than 26,000 pounds — which requires the driver to have a commercial driver’s license (CDL) — and want to re-rate to a non-CDL GVWR of 26,000 pounds or less in order to avoid this requirement.
