FMVSS 138: Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS)

TPMS phase-in requirements, which apply to passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks and buses with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less, began in 2005 and took full effect for multistage manufactured vehicles in 2008. These requirements result from a mandate in the TREAD Act of 2000, and are intended “to warn drivers of significant under-inflation of tires and the resulting safety problems.”
