Chassis Precautions When Welding or Plasma Cutting

We have been told that when welding on a new chassis, we need to disconnect many electronic control modules, including the instrument cluster, to prevent damage from voltage spikes. How do we find out what each chassis manufacturer requires prior to welding or plasma cutting on their specific chassis?
