Ambulance Manufacturers Division (AMD), an NTEA operating division since 1986, is composed of manufacturers of ambulances, rescue and emergency vehicles, and related emergency apparatus and equipment. The group works to expand and improve its market segment; acquire, preserve, and disseminate information on the role of emergency vehicles; improve relationships with other industry segments; promote new product innovations; and assist in development of industry safety standards and programs.
AMD has addressed many initiatives in the emergency vehicle and medical services industries, including continued occupant and vehicle safety research advancements and integration of such advancements into applicable programs of governmental organizations like National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), General Services Administration (GSA), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and partners such as National Association of State EMS Officials (NASEMSO). Several AMD members also participate in ambulance and related standards committees of SAE International, NASEMSO, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS), which enables a consistent and reliable flow of information between AMD and the committees.
Ten recommended practices have been developed and maintained since 2010 through SAE International under the safety research program collaboration with NIOSH, delivering advanced test methodologies for ambulance patient compartment seating and restraints, patient litters and restraints, and equipment mounts. AMD coordinates with other industry organizations regarding the integration of these recommended SAE practices in future ambulance standards versions. GSA, NFPA, and CAAS have incorporated the new SAE practices into their respective vehicle requirements.
Some AMD members also participate in research and development activities in several areas of child transport safety as part of a government-industry project. Additionally, the group developed and provides updates for the AMD Standardized Test Methods, last revised in 2024, which provides test procedures to verify requirements of GSA, NFPA, and CAAS.
AMD maintains strong relationships with many chassis manufacturers and greatly appreciates their ongoing support and product updates to their emergency vehicle chassis.
