NTEA visited Arrowhead Truck Equipment Inc. (Bixby, Oklahoma), an NTEA Distributor member since 2006. Owners Justin and Kim Doak founded the company in 2005 after Justin’s employer closed its doors and he found himself rigging a half-ton truck in his own garage to fulfill a customer order.
Arrowhead is a Native American-owned business certified as an 8(a) participant in the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Minority Enterprise Development Program. This certification — which helps Arrowhead compete with larger corporations when vying for federal contracts — opened up a new area of truck equipment building and was an important steppingstone for the business.
As the company grew, it moved into a 900-square foot facility and added a couple of employees. The next shift was to a 9,000-square foot building with a separate office, where it currently resides.
Knapheide service body
Arrowhead is a full-line truck equipment house serving Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the surrounding area. It offers a wide range of custom bodies and equipment, including dump, platform and stake, service, oilfield, van, chipper, farm/ranch and truck-mounted crane bodies. It also provides snowplows, sand spreaders, liftgates, hydraulic hoists, air compressors, bale moving equipment, ladder racks, lift axles, light truck and van interiors, toolboxes, special lighting, winches, wet-line kits, and a host of other truck accessories.
Justin, a Cherokee Indian and grandson of rodeo bull rider legend Jim Shoulders, attributes much of the company’s success to hard work and dedicated employees. He said he only hires the best-skilled people available, and once they’re on board, Arrowhead works to keep them. Other strategies that have been effective for the operation include maintaining a diverse product line and not running the business beyond its means (pay as you go).
Looking ahead, Arrowhead will need additional production space and a larger parking area for customer trucks and inventory. The business is working to secure 10 additional acres, with plans to build an installation facility, offices and a product showroom. This change will not only position the company for future growth, it will enable faster, more efficient customer service.
