Adaptive driving beam headlighting systems

Published in the October 2018 issue of Washington Update

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) proposing amendments to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108: Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment to permit the certification of adaptive driving beam headlighting systems, if the manufacturer chooses to equip vehicles with these systems. Toyota Motor North America, Inc. petitioned NHTSA for rulemaking to amend FMVSS No. 108 to permit manufacturers the option of equipping vehicles with adaptive driving beam systems. NHTSA granted Toyota’s petition and proposes to  establish appropriate performance requirements to ensure the safe introduction of adaptive driving beam headlighting systems if equipped on newly manufactured vehicles. Comments on this NPRM must be received on or before December 11, 2018. Agency Contact: Mr. Markus Price, 202–366–0098
