Motor vehicle tariff report delivered

Published in the February 2019 issue of Washington Update

The U.S. Department of Commerce delivered its confidential report on possible auto and parts tariffs to the President last week. The Section 232 (National Security) report has not been released to the public. The President has 90 days to make a decision on the report’s recommendations. It is expected that the report calls for some tariffs on imported light duty vehicles and parts in order to bolster the domestic industry. It is unclear at this time the full range of vehicles, component and parts that may be included in the report and how any possible tariffs could affect the work truck industry. Under the new USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement), goods from Canada and Mexico would be exempt from these auto and parts tariffs.
