Labor department reconsidering overtime rule

Published in the August 2017 issue of Washington Update

Under the previous Administration, the Department of Labor (DOL) issued rules which would have doubled the annual salary threshold for overtime pay to $47,476. The new labor secretary has said that salary threshold amendment was excessive, although the current threshold of $23,660 should be updated.

The DOL plans to revise the threshold and has asked for public comment. In particular DOL has asked for input on whether the current threshold of $23,660 should be updated for inflation, and whether there should be multiple standard salary thresholds based on employer size, region of the country and other factors.
