NTEA recently crossed paths with Scelzi Enterprises Inc., a Distributor member headquartered in Fresno, California.
Three Scelzi brothers — Mike, Gary and Jim — started the company in 1979 with a small loan from their father Monroe (who always wanted his sons to be in business together). They first set up shop in a small building on Thesta Avenue in Fresno. Before opening the family business, Mike was building cars in his garage when he was 20 years old. Gary began his career at a Fresno Chevrolet dealership, joining Mike the year Scelzi Enterprises began. After an 11-year break to win numerous drag racing awards, Gary returned to the company in 2008. Jim was actively involved from 2006 until he retired in 2017.

The company’s first products were flatbed bodies. In the beginning, the team couldn’t afford the newest tools and equipment; however, they were committed to building quality truck bodies. Dealers and end users appreciated their products, and sales climbed.
Eventually, the company added different body styles with custom features. Recently, its largest sales increases have come from dump bodies and water trucks. In 2005, Scelzi Enterprises purchased assets of Paramount Truck Body (Azusa, California), a water truck and dump body builder since 1946. This operation was moved to Fresno in 2017 and into a new production facility designed to handle larger truck bodies. Scelzi Enterprises sticks with what it does best — design and construction of Class 2–8 work truck bodies. The company has been recognized as a top volume producer of both Ford and RAM truck bodies.
Scelzi Enterprises covers 25 acres, with approximately 400 employees involved in manufacturing, sales and support roles (including specialists who perform certified training on cranes, hoists, lifts, and other unique features and accessories). The organization has retained some key, long-term employees who serve in management capacities. Its approximately 250,000-square-foot manufacturing space is located in Fresno, with assembly and pool locations in California, Colorado, Oregon and Washington.
The Scelzi Enterprises team credits its success to hard work, listening to customers and an unwavering commitment to quality. One thing they’ve learned in 40 years: A reputation for great quality is extremely hard to earn and even harder to maintain. An NTEA member since 1985, the company is actively involved in the Association’s Member Verification Program (ntea.com/mvp), which recognizes eligible companies in the work truck industry for outstanding business practices and successful implementation of quality standards.
