NTEA recently crossed paths with Levan Machine & Truck Equipment, a distributor member headquartered in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania. This third-generation, family-owned business has been in the same location for 83 years.
Levan Machine & Truck Equipment was started in 1936 by Walter Levan, grandfather of current CEO and President Brian Levan. The business began as a machine shop catering to local mushroom farmers and nearby townships, providing machinery, general repair and welding services. During World War II, Walter was called to join the U.S. Navy. While he was away on active military duty, his wife Sarah learned to use a lathe and continued running the company, supporting the government’s war effort.
Although the business tinkered with custom truck upfits in its early years, it didn’t officially launch a commercial truck upfit division until 2007. After partnering with companies like Boss Snowplow, The Knapheide Manufacturing Company and EBY Truck Bodies, Levan Machine & Truck Equipment grew exponentially in the early 2000s. Now, the machine shop has customers throughout the U.S., Mexico, Europe and South America.
The business is situated in four buildings spread across adjacent properties, with off-site storage locations for inventory and chassis. Levan Machine & Truck Equipment’s largest expansion was completed in July 2017, with the opening of a third truck production facility — an 8,000-square foot space that allows for introduction of new product lines. The company now has buildings specifically designed to handle work truck installation.
