Steel and aluminum tariffs

Published in the June 2018 issue of Washington Update

New tariffs on steel and aluminum took effect for trading partners Canada, Mexico and the European Union on June 1, 2018. The 25 percent steel and 10 percent aluminum tariffs were originally announced in March, but exemptions were granted for major trading partners to allow time for further negotiations. The deadline on those exemptions expired without agreements. The tariffs were imposed under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 that allows the president to increase or reduce tariffs on goods deemed critical to national security.

As when originally announced, NTEA continues to oppose the imposition of these new tariffs.
