NTEA recently met up with Smyrna Truck & Cargo (STC), a distributor member since 1989 headquartered in Smyrna, Georgia, northwest of Atlanta. The organization has two additional locations — a newly expanded facility in La Grange, Texas, and another in Social Circle, Georgia. Scott Edens, president and owner, is a third-generation family member managing the company.
In 1952, bothers CJ and Jerry Fouts started Fouts Bros Inc. with a small Sinclair gas station in Smyrna. Today, STC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fouts Bros. From 1970–1993, the company operated as a car and truck dealer for Nissan, GMC Trucks, Isuzu and UD work trucks. In 1988, it became a truck equipment distributor, and expanded again after adding a Ford bailment pool in 1990. Two years later, the business grew further and became a fire apparatus manufacturer. Eventually becoming a Reading distributor, STC evolved from a small fabrication shop to a full-line truck equipment distributor.
In business 67 years, STC is one of the largest and most diverse truck equipment companies in the U.S., manufacturing or assembling over 5,000 commercial vehicles per year. The company distributes Reading truck bodies, Rugby and DuraClass dumps, Masterack van interiors, Maxon liftgates and Liftmoore cranes, and is a Miller Industries dealer. STC also manufactures its own line of van bodies and flatbeds.

In 2012, STC acquired the Reading Truck Body facility in La Grange, Texas, adding 11.2 acres and 54,000 square feet. This site expanded to include 20 acres and over 80,000 square feet in June 2019, complete with a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by second, third and fourth generation family members. This new facility allows STC to double its current van body and flatbed manufacturing capacity, while providing a dedicated production line for its fire apparatus division.
The company’s keys to growth include evolving to meet market needs and implementing continuous improvement efforts to achieve short- and long-term customer retention goals. STC employs 225 people in its three locations.
